Helpful Hints for Layering in the Cold
The best thing to do in order to keep your body warm when it's cold outside is to layer your clothes. Layering allows your body to be comfortable. You stay warm, but you also have the ability to remove some garments if the weather changes in order to stay comfortable.

  • The first layer of clothing should manage moisture by moving perspiration away from the skin to keep you dry and comfortable
  • The second layers should trap warm air escaping from your body and hold it in open spaces within the insulation to keep your body warm and insulated. Multiple layers of insulation may be needed depending on the outside temperature.
  • The outer layer should provide protection from wind, rain, sleet and snow and keep cold air and moisture from penetrating into the insulation layers.

Also Remember...

Clothing should be lightweight and give you freedom to move depending on what you are doing.

Wear hats and neckwarmers. They go a long way in keeping us warm-as 1/2 of our body heat is lost from our heads.

Don't forget your feet!! Wear insulated socks, shoes and boots. Wet, cold feet can bring your body temperature down dramatically.
